BEER FOR THE TROOPS.
Per Press Association—Copyright. Auckland, last night,
The Mayor has received the following telegram from the Government,:—“ Your telegram conveying the decision of the committee not to give intoxicating drink to the Imperial troops at the luncheon on Saturday has just been received. Government have been opposed to spirits being given to the troops in any part of the colony, but as the men are accustomed to a glass of beer it is only right that no attempt should be made to force them one way or the other. Beer will be provided for them immediately after your lunch.” The Mayor sent the following reply : “ Will submit the decision of the Government re liquor to the Executive Committee.” ARBITRATION COURT.
The Premier has wired to Mr Witheford, M.H.R.: —“ Cabinet has decided to offer the appointment of Judge and President of the Arbitration Court to Mr Theo. Cooper, of Auckland.” MR SHIRLEY BAKER.
Rev. Shirley Baker, who has been residing in Tonga for the past year or two, returned to Auckland by the Manapouri. Mr Baker is in a very weak state of health. On arrival here he had to be carried ashore on a stretcher, being far too weak to stand,
