General Synod.
Per Press Association.—Copyright. Napier, last night. The General Synod to-day passed a resolution of sympathy with Dean Jacobs’ family, and his services to the Church were highly eulogised by various speakers. A motion was passed recommending the Committee on Trusts to subscribe £2OO for the ’erection of a Bishop’s residence at Dunedin ; .£75 towards the reduction of the debt on Bishopscourt, Wellington, conditionally on the Diocese raising £225 ; and a similar conditional allocation was made to the Bishopric Endowment Fund, Wellington. There was a considerable discussion on a motion by Archdeacon Cholmondeley to allow the lessons to be read from the revised version of the Bible where desired. The motion was ultimately lost. • A motion asking the Bishop to revise the list of lessons and psalms was also lost.
Last night a bill was read a second time for the trial of bishops for crime os immorality; wilful and persistent violation of the provisions of the constitution, or of the ecclesiastic laws in force in the diocese; neglect of duty ; false doctrine. Tho bill was taken into committee, and good progress made.
