Wirth’s circus is to be in Napier tomorrow night. A meeting of the Sports Committee of the Caledonian Society will be. held at 8 this evening. The Beckford and Taylor’s Novelty entertainment is to.be. given at the Theatre Royal on Tuesday night. Some Maoris near Tuamotu Island missed a child, and on going to get water for the dinner found the child’s dead body in the well. “ It is the first year we have ever paid anything off the debtor balance,” said the Chairman of the Napier Harbor Board at the meeting on Monday. Mr J. E. Foster left for Wellington last evening on business in connection with the Wi Pere Trust Estate. He will be absent from Gisborne for a fortnight. The Napier correspondent of the Hawke’s Bay Herald says that the people of Wellington are good at billet-hunting for themselves, but are not keen at finding billots for others. This in regard to the Imperial troops. In a case at Christchurch in which a young man was called upon to pay something towards the maintenance of his wife, whom he had cruelly wronged and then deserted, the Magistrate said that he would have shot himself before he would have been guilty of such conduct. The Matron of the Hospital (Miss Stewart) acknowledges gifts of fruit from. Mesdames Manders, Symes, Tucker, and James Martin; lemonade from Mrs J. Lucas; illustrated papers from Messrs C. P. Davies and Keefer; old linen from Mrs East; flowers weekly, from Christian Endeavor Society and many other friends. The Mayor yesterday received a telegram from Mr Ward to the effect that the Imperial officers had decided not to allow the troops to come to Gisborne. The Defence Department has sent an imitation for representative Gisborne volunteers to go to Napier when the Imperial troops are there.
At the meeting of the Hospital Trustees last night the Chairman saicl that the contractor, Mr Skeet, had timber in readiness to go on with the additions to the Hospital, but it would not do to allow the noise of hammertng while there were fever patients in the Hospital. By the terms of the contract they could suspend it until such time as they thought proper. Other Trustees endorsed the view that work could not be allowed to go on at present, and on the motion of Mr Macfarlane, seconded by Mr Harding, it was decided that work be suspended for the present, in terms of the contract. A committee meeting of the Taruheru Road Board was held yesterday, Messrs Macfarlane (Chairman) and H. G. Tucker being present. The following tenders were received for the delivery of 400 yards ■tyaipaoa beach metal on the Makauri School road; H. G, White, 2s lOd per yard; McCullough, 2s lOd; Pitcher, 2s lOd ; Henderson and Hyde stipulating to complete delivery by February 28th instead of 23rd, contract -date, 2s 6d. G. Scragg and Habgood, 2s 6d (accepted). In view of the stipulation made by Messrs Henderson and Hyde it was considered that it could not be considered in face of the other tender at the same pricei Our Tologa Bay correspondet writes under date February 4: —A floral in memoriam service for Her late Majesty Queen Victoria was held in the schoolroom on Sunday evening, conducted by Mr Rowsell. The congregation was one of the largest ever seen in Tologa, people coming in from stations for miles around. Some of those who were unfortunate enough to come late found all the available seating accommodation in the building occupied, and were given seats in ' the school porch. The memoriam table, above which were the letters V.R. in black l a white ground, and over which was d- red the Union Jack with black streamers, . is literally covered with many pretty wreaths brought by’the ladies of the congregation. The Dead March was played by Miss Gallagher (organ) and Mr'Rowsell (violin),. The National Anthem was sung’at the conclusion of the service.
