Harnessing Te Reinga.
COUNCIL’S ACTION.
Ax the meeting of the Borough Council last night, Cr Joyce asked what it_ was intended to do in regard to the offer of Messrs Stcuart and Fenn, of Auckland, to send an expert to report ns to the possibility of harnessing Te Reinga Falls to supply Gisborne with electrical power. The offer was to merely charge travelling expenses. He thought tho expert should also visit Hutchinson’s. The Mayor said that it would be for tho Council to decide that night if they desired.
Cr Joyce urged that further slops should be taken in the matter: the expense entailed would bo ..trifling, and townspeople generally were taking great interest in this matter. He moved that the offer of Messrs Stcuart and Fenn be accepted. Cr Johnston asked whether the money could be taken out of rates, aud a reply was received in the affirmative. Cr Jones said he would second the proposition if a limit wore made, say L 25. It would be money well spent. Cr Joyce agreed to that. Cr Harding said he did not wish to throw a damper on the proposal, but he did not sec how anything could be done under LSO. The expert would require a man with him. and then besides fares there would be buggy and horse hire, etc. They must also give some little bonus. Cr Nolan: I think we should ask for some idea as to the cost.
The Mayor said if they decided to get a report they should try and get it about the same time' as Mr Mestayer came up. He did not think they would get a report for £25. Sir Bovlan's report on the water supply had cost LSO. Cr Jones : But he charged engineering fees. Cr Joyce said that the Council should be better able to reckon up the expenses than the electricians, who would not know the distances.
Cr Kennedy said that the suggestion came from a trade firm whose hope was that a report would lead to further business, and he thought it would be only right to ask them to make the cost a nominal one. There would be no objection to asking them the cost. Cr Jones : That is the reasen I made it so low.
On the motion of the Mayor, seconded by Cr Kennedy, it was decided to write asking what the charges would amount
