‘ Melbourne, last night. Colonel Wyndham lias been instructed to proceed to New Zealand at daylight to-morrow.

The Indian troops arc expected to remain here for a fortnight.

Received Jan. 31, at 1.27 a.m. Melbourne, Jan. 30. At . the conference of the Victorian Picimei* and Messrs Gurr, AVaurcn, an cl Seddon, in connection with the Eastern Extension Cable Company’s charges and right to open its own offices, hold today, the Premier of Queensland telegraphed that his colony, whilst not seeing its way to grant the Company’s terms, was prepared to assure their business fair treatment, at the same time working fairly with the Pacific contracting parties. Messrs Tumor and Seddon concurred in this view, and, with Queensland, will bo no party to giving terms to the Eastern Extension Company that the Imperial Government and Canada deem prejudicial to the 1 acifie, and which will decrease the business oyer that line, and increase the contribution of the contracting parties. A suggestion which it is understood emanated from the Pacific Cable Advisory Board, to the effect that there should be a common purse, or in other words, that there should bo arrangements the same as exist with other companies, American and elsewhere ; that they should bo made to work under a fixed tariff, and to transmit messages in case of a. breakdown, the transmittting company giving a percentage to the company that otherwise would have forwarded the message. Discussion took place on this and other suggestions. A joint memorandum is to be sent to the Eastern Extension Company. The Governments of Victoria and Queensland arc very firm in their refusal to do anything to stultify their respective colonies in the eyes of the other Pacific contracting parties.
