MAN SHOT, WOMAN WOUNPED
A PLUCKY WIDOW.
THE murderer captured. By Telegraph-Press Association- Copyright London, Jan. 18. A. determined attempt at a double murder was made by an ex-aoldior named Hill, who succeeded m the first effort, shooting a farmer, but who failed to kill the next victim, a woman. The tragedy took place m the lavatory compartment of the South-Wes-tern train when it was approaching Surbiton. -r. „ The farmer, whose name was 1 earson, was killed, after which c the murderer returned to the compartment and shot in the cheek a widow, who was the only other occupant. Hill then rilled Pearson s body, and jumped from the train when it was entering Vauxhall. • The woman, with great presence of mind, feigned death until the murderor left the carriage, when she gave the alarm, and the result of hor promptitude was that the murderer was arrested by the police after an exciting chase.
