A SAVAGE ISLAND VISITOR. DEATH FROM MISADVENTURE. [By Telegraph—Press Association.] Auckland, last night. Among the passengers by the schooner Ysabel, which arrived from Niue (Savage Island) this morning was a friend of the King of Niue, by name Kalapi, who bears a letter of introduction to the Premier, the Hon. R. J. Seddon. With the arrival of three more men who have been selected, the Auckland division of the Sixth Contingent is now praotically complete. An elderly man named John McDonald was arrested yesterday afternoon on a charge of drunkenness, and was taken to the lockup. As he had sustained some injuries to his head he was removed to the hospital, and was then found to be suSering from a fracture of the base of the skull. McDonald died last night. An inquest was held this morning. A witness named Charles White deposed as to seeing the deceased leaning up against a window and then falling backwards on his head on to the pavement. Dr. Bett deposed that death was due to a fracture of the base of the skull. A verdict was returned in accordance with the medical evidence.
