PLUCKY NEW ZEALANDERS. VICTORIA COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIPS. • [by telegraph—pkess association.] Wellington, last night. Amongst the passengers by the Moana, which arrived to-day from Sydney, were Sergeant L’Estrange, Corporal Shepherd, and Trooper Smythe of the First New Zealand Contingent, who came over to the colony to return to the front with the Sixth Contingent. Corporal Jones, of the Second Contingent, also returned invalided. The six leading candidates for the Victoria College scholarships are as follows, the names being given in order of merit:— Euphemia Law (Wellington), 1485; Mary Falla (Westport), 1449 ; Arthur Cathie (Te Aro), 1393; Elsie Morrison (Masterton), 1366; Robert Macmorran (Wellington), 1359; EdithHind (Wellington), 1350. At a meeting of the old residents of the Canterbury provincial district, held to-night, the Hon. W. C. Walker presiding, it was decided to form an association for the maintenance of social intercourse between members. A committee was appointed to carry out the preliminary arrangements. The stewards of. the Wellington Racing Club having determined to cut telegraph communication off from the course at a meeting next week, the Hon. J. G. Ward now says that the department having established a service which is used by the public and newspapers, he will take steps to have such communication with the course maintained.
