By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. SYDNEY, December 31. A destructive fire at Newcastle burned the stores and bond of D. Cohen and Co. with an immense stock, including large quantities of matches and sulphur. It destroyed buildings five storeys high. The firemen, owing to primitive appliances, were unable to cope with the fire, and concentrated their efforts to saving the surrounding buildings. The main building is still burning. The damage is estimated at £50,000. January Ist. Tho cause of the fire is a mystery. The fumes of the smouldering sulphur rendered the work difficult. The seamen of the various ships in harbor rendered valuable assistance. The water supply was sadly deficient. It is understood that the contents were insured, but the amount is not stated.
