JAPAN’S CLAIM ON U.S.
RED CROSS SHIP SUNK (10 a.m.) TOKYO, May 27. The Japanese Foreign Office filed a claim with the United States Government today for 45,000,000 dollars and the replacement of the Red Cross supply ship Awa Maru, which was_ sunk by an American submarine on April 1, 1945, in violation of the safe conduct agreement. . ~ At American insistence, the Awa Maru carried Red Cross supplies to Allied prisoners in south-east Asia, with a round trip guaranteed. En route home with 2003 passengers aboard, it was sunk by a submarine which picked up one survivor. The United States, answering the Japanese protest on June 29, 1945, said the indemnity! would be discussed after the war. 1
