TOURNEY IN WAIROA DEFENCE OF OPEN TITLE IMFROVED FA I R\V A YS With fairways rnd green in much better condition than for many seasons, the annual open tournament of the Wairca Goif Club to be held during the coming week-end promises to be the most successful in the history of the series. A number of outside entries have been received, but pest entries will be accepted. Of particular interest is the match for terms of four from any club. The Wairoa A team won litis match lastyear by a narrow margin from the Poverty Bay team, previous holders of the cup. Last year's open champion. W. D Barker, of the Poverty Bay club, will be defending his title, and it is exceeded that he will meet strong opposition. Ch;b Competitions Unfavourable weather conditions again caused a small attendance of players at the Wairoa links on Saturday. The third round of the president's trophy was played and resulted as follows: J. H. Scott and J. L. Prebble cl. G. Dulcy and H. leeway at the tilth; R. C. Bauld. jun.. and A. E. West cl. E. J. Krogh and P. B. Thorne-George, 5 & 4; C. C. Smith and R. C. Hyman cl. A. D. Taylor and T. W. Dunlop, 2 and 1; M. P. Baird and M. H. Tenkinson cl. R. C. Bauld, sen., and C. Jelbert, 2 and 1. Competitions conducted on the Tuoi course recently were productive of satisfactory results. Mrs. Crack defeated Mrs. Dixon in the final bout of the Pare Kciha tlight. and in a series of medal matches Mrs. Kobo 75. Mrs. Pcre 73, Mrs. Crack 87. and Mrs. Tail 75 returned tiie best net scores in their respective heats. T. McMurray won the men’s bogey match with a round of two-up and A. V. Nicholson, cll-squarc. was the next in order. The best Stableiord cards handed in wore those of P. Kr.ua. 34 net. R. W. Halbert 33, R. Ivcss and C. Read 32 each. R. Clarke and D. B. Tcnnent 30 each. Hume and McMurray lost the men’s buttons to Ellis and Howell. Tlie third round of the Moanaroa Cup , and the second round of the conjunctive flight are to be decided this week between Sharp and Tcnncnt. Tilley and Corbett, Halbert and Howell. T. McMurray and Robb. Kaua and Davies. Kainamu and Bradley, Nicholson and Freeman, Read and Crockery On Sunday and Monday afternoons tlie Pitt Clip mixed foursomes will be played. Competitors arc to arrange iheir own partners and fours for the two rounds of medal play. Students may participate in three rounds cf match play during the week. The draw is: Mclnncs v. Thomson: A.
