THE SOCCER CODE

HOLIDAY_FIXTURES KYNE CUP CONTEST TROPHY FOR JUNIORS By "Dribbler” Considerable disappointment was felt on Saturday when an enthusiastic gathering of players and supporters of Association football discovered that play had been prohibited on the Childers Road Reserve as a result. of the previous night’s heavy fall of rain. With the P.B. Football Association’s competitions in a very interesting stage, the games scheduled to take place had been eagerly awaited and their enforced postponement must be regarded as extremely unfortunate. However, interest should be revived by the arrangement of fixtures for the forthcoming King's Birthday holiday. On this date senior clubs will play in a knock-out competition for the Kyne Cup, while a similar competition is being conducted for juniors who will contest a trophy donated by the R.S.A. club. The junior competition will commence next Saturday with one game in the first round being played, and will be continued on Monday morning when the semi-finals of both the junior and senior competitions will take place. Both finals are set clown for the afternoon. The draw for these games is as follows: May 31.—Juniors, First Round: Rovers v. R.S.A., No. 1 ground, 1.15 p.m. June 2.—Juniors, Semi-finals: Wanderers v. P. and T., No. 1 ground; Thistle v. winners of first round match; both at 9 a.m.' Seniors: Wanderers v. Eastern Union, No. 1 ground; Thistle v. R.S.A., No. 2 ground, both at 10.30 a.m. Conspicuous Contenders The Kyne Cup competition which is an annual fixture has always provided football of a spectacular nature, and on many occasions produced the outstanding games of the year. This season’s event should be no exception, as rarely before have four so evenly-matched teams contested the trophy. The form displayed by all four clubs so far this winter has been good, and it would be purely speculation to attempt to predict which one will eventually annexe the cup. R.S.A., who are at present leading in the senior league competition, have been training well and with their forward line much improved since last year should be hard to beat. Their first opponents will be Thistle, whom they defeated convincingly in a recent competition game. Thistle, however, are not likely to allow them to repeat this performance without a struggle, and the game may result in a reversal of fortune. It is several years now since this latter club figured in King’s Birthday tourneys, but it may take a prominent part on this occasion. Eastern Union, on the other hand, have been prominently featured, having annexed the trophy once and been runners-up twice in the past three times on which it has been contested. Their form of late, however, has been very disappointing, and will have to improve if they wish to maintain their fine record. The fourth club, Wanderers, has yet to make its debut in this series of matches, but will be a strong contender nevertheless.

Appeal For Referees

With the increase in number of grades and teams this year, the Referees Association has had its work doubled, and with only a limited membership is experiencing difficulty in providing officials for all games. The association appeals to past players and others interested to assist the code by offering their services. It is hoped that a strong and efficient body will develop in the near future. Position of Teams Tire position of the various teams in the league competitions is as follows: SENIORS

P. W. L. D. Goals Pts. F. A. R.S.A. 5 3 1 .1 7 10 9 Thistle .. 5 2 2 1 5 12 11 East. Union 5 1 2 2 4 10 11 Wanderers 5 1 2 2 4 8 9 Wanderers 3 JUNIORS 2 1 4 5 1 P. & T. .. 4 2 2 - 4 5 5 Rovers 3 1 1 1 3 3 3 R.S.A. .. 3 1 1 1 3 3 6 Thistle . 3 1 2 ■ 2 6 7
