GREEK ARMY’S DRIVE

LARGE AREA CLEARED 9000 BANDITS STILL ACTIVE (10 a.m.) LONDON, May 26. The Times correspondent in Athens says that the Greek General Staff announces that as a result of operations which began on April 9 the whole of the Pindus-Agrapha district from Kalabaka southward, an area of 4000 square kilometres, has been completely cleared of bandits. Many bandits are trying to re-enter the cleared area. The correspondent adds, that as it is estimated that 8000 or 9000 bandits are still active, it doubtless will be a long time to bring peace to a country relying on military measures alone. Forty guerrillas were killed when they attacked an army column northwest of Naoussa, in Western Macedonia. Three hundred guerrillas killed six policemen and four civilians when they attacked Lividc in Peloponnesas.
