WAIKOHU RUGBY

SERVICES APPRECIATED FAREWELL PRESENTATION A large and representative gathering of players and supporters of the Whatatutu and Waipaoa Rugby clubs assembled at Whatatutu during the week end, when a presentation was made to Mr. Gordon Gregory, who is leaving the district. Mr. A. Hammond, on behalf of the Waipaoa club, Mr. R. Tamanui for the Maori players, Mr. R. King, of the Whatatutu club, and Mr. W. S. Picken, for the Waikohu Rugby Sub-Union, expressed appreciation of the sterling service given by the recipient to the cause of Rugby. Members of the Gregory family had been closely associated with football in the Waikohu district for a long period. Mr. Gregory senior was an active and enthusiastic member of the Whatatutu club 35 years ago. He served on the management committee of the Waikohu sub-union and was president for a number of years. Three of his sons played excellent football for the Whatatut 1 club. On his retirement, Mi. Gordon Gregory succeeded him . and carried on the traditional family enthusiasm for Rugby. The presentation took the form of a handsome entree dish inscribed: “Presented to Gordon Gregory from players of the Whatatutu and Waipaoa football clubs, in recognition of 20 years’ service to Rugby.” Mr. Gregory, in thanking the donors, assured them that he would carry with him pleasant recollections of his long association with football in the Waikohu sub-union. KEEN PRACTICE GAMES Owing to the representative fixture on Saturday no competition games were played in the Waikohu senior division, but two practice matches produced keen play during the week-end. At Puna, the home club defeated a Gisborne H. 5.0.8. team by 11 points to nine, in a close game played at a fast pace, despite the heavy condition of the ground. The defence on both sides was particularly good. Waimata travelled to Whatatutu and found the home team in form, Whatatutu winning in another good contest by 14 points to four. Appreciated refreshments at both centres were propided by lady supporters of the respective clubs.
