REES’ GOLF VICTORY

DAILY MAIL TOURNEY BATTLE WITH VON NIDA LONDON, May 23. Two small men—Dai Rees, of Wales and Von Nida, of Australia —dominated the battle of golfing giants in the Daily Mail tournament. The Irish champion, Daly, contributed towards making thhe closing stages thrilling and uncertain. Rees, who has been "knocking at the door” in recent big golf events, started the final round with only a one-stroke advantage over Von Nida. A couple of good early putts set the Welshman right on his feet to do the outward nine in par 35. Rees made the tourna-ment-winning shot at the 225 yards fifteenth with a full spoon into a crosswind that landed two yards past the pin. He rammed down the putt. The spectators, who wildly cheered Rees, were scarcely less appreciative of Von Nida’s brave’ last round of 69 because he must have been fully aware of what he had to do. Nine holes from home, Daly “burned up the course” in a strong effort to catch the leaders. With an outward half of 33, he picked up two strokes on Rees but had five at the thirteenth and with it went his chance. Scores: Rees, 72, 68 — 279: Von Nida, 71, 69—281; Daly, 71, 69—283; Branch, 72, 75—286; Cotton, 73. 72—283.
