SILK WINS MATCH

SUPERB GOLF DISPLAY WGON JUST DEFEATED GALLOWAY’S POPULAR WIN (P.A.) AUCKLAND. May 26. Producing out of his already superior golf equipment two miracle shots to the 18th green in both his semi-final and final matches. B. M. Silk. Wanganui. established himself ns the outstanding player of tbe £750 Victory golf tournament at Titirangi on Saturday by winning the amateur championship by one hole from D. L. Woon, Christchurch

Silk in the morning defeated R. H. Glading, New Zealand open champion, with a run of three birdies at the 16th, 17th and 18th holes. In the afternoon he scored birdies at the 17th and 18th holes to win from Woon after being on (he losing end of the match for most of the play.

J. Galloway. Whangarei professional. scored a merited and popular win in the professional championship, defeating A. Murray, Auckland, at the 20th green in the semi-final in the morning, and W. Allbon. Auckland, by 5 up and 4 in the afternoon. Galloway by his victory in the event won £IOO.

The final was followed by the £SO challenge match between T. W. Wight, Dunedin professional, who withdrew from match play because of the threatened strike by members of the Professional Golfers’ Association, and A. J. Shaw. Shaw won the £4O made available to the winner, but was taken to the 21st green in the longest match of the tournament before he succeeded. Wight lost the first three holes in a nervous start and did not come on to his game until the 10th hole, but from then on fought courageously in an attempt to win Results: Professionals Semi-finals—J. Galloway (Whangarei) beat A. Murray (Auckland) at the 20th; W. Allbon (Auckland) beat A E. Guy (Auckland), 2 and 1. Final—Galloway beat Allbon, 5 and 4Amateurs. Semi-finals.—B. M. Silk , (Wanganui) beat R. H. Glading (Titirangi), 2 up; D L. Woon (Christchurch) beat H. D. Brinsden (Titirangi), 4 and 3. Final.—Silk beat Woon. 1 up.
