U.S. WOOL IMPORT DUTY
HOUSE APPROVES LEVY MEASURE MAY BE VETOED WASHINGTON. May 2;i. The House of Representatives, by 151 votes to 113, passed the Wool Bill which authorises the President to impose a 50 per cent, ad valorem import fee on foreign wools in addition to the present duty of 34 cents a pound. The measure now goes back to the Senate. The Senate's Wool Bill did not contain a provision for the import fee. If the Senate concurs, the Presidential veto is expected. To attempts to modify the bill were heavily defeated. One amendment aimed at pegging the price at which the Government must support the domestic wool market a.t 90 per cent, of the 1946 parity level. The other amendment would have directed the President to impose no additional import duties on wool if such interfered with the reciprocal trade programme but it was defeated by 102 votes to 27.
