£535 FOR A CALF
N.Z. JERSEY RECORD (P.A.) NEW PLYMOUTH, May 26 A price of 510 guineas, the highest price yet paid in New Zealand for a yearling Jersey bull was brought by a nine-months-old calf at the sale of the Rata Glen stud of Mrs. E. S. Coilett and Son, Inglewood, on Saturday. The animal was Rata Glen Right Royal and the purchaser was Mr. S. A. Tippett, Okaiawa.
for pride that New Zealand had been able to break all records for house building in the last two. years. Mr. Semple attacked a claim, which, he said, had been made by the Leader of the Opposition, Mr. S. G. Holland, that it would be in the interests of the country if all building restrictions were wiped out. Under the present building control regulations the floor area of homes was related to a man’s family responsibities. The effect of these was that a man without a family could not build a palatial residence, and they ensured that a man with children was given an opportunity to build sufficient living accommodation.
Discussing criticism by Mr. W. Sullivan. M.P., during the by-election, Mr. Semple said it had never been the Government's policy to monopolise house building, nor was it true to say that the import licensing system was hampering home building. The difficulty was to obtain materials from overseas countries which were loth to export materials needed for their own housing.
In the United States it had been stated that 4,000,000 former servicemen were homeless. After building controls were removed there prices had skyrocketed.
