MORAL INFLUENCE

BRITAIN GIVES LEAD EMPIRE DAY CEREMONY (P.A.) AUCKLAND. May 26. The annual Empire Day ceremony was held at the statue of Quees Victoria, Albert Park, on Saturday. The ceremony was arranged by Auckland patriotic societies. Mr. C. H. T. Palmer presided. A guard of honour was formed by members of the Boys’ Life Brigade. After the sounding of “The *Last Post” official wreaths were laid by the Mayor, Mr. J. A. C. Allum, and the town clerk, Mr. T. W. M. Ashby, representatives from the Victoria League, Royal Empire Society, Royal Society of St. George, Overseas League, English Speaking Union and the Navy. League. Mr. Allum said that although the British Empire attained the peak of its material prosperity and influence during the reign of Queen Victoria, its moral influence was highest during the dark days of 1940 when it stood alone as the one bulwark against the aggression of ruthless men. This fact was often overlooked and conveniently forgotten by those toddy who had the hardihood to claim their pound of flesh from our Motherland.
