LOST OVERBOARD
STOWAWAY DISAPPEARS INCIDENT IN TASMAN ( p a.) AUCKLAND, May 26. Found on the Union Steam Ship Company’s chartered steamer Fort Coulonge three days out from Sydney, a stowaway disappeared in the early hours of Thursday morning when the vessel was approaching the New Zealand coast on route to Auckland. He was David Carrol, aged 36, second-hand tyre dealer, who lived with his sister at 87 Story street, Rozelle, Sydney. Members of the crew of the Fort Coulogne, Which berthed at Auckland on Saturday morning, saw Carroll on the ship watching a consignment of tyres being loaded before her departure on May 17. , . , On Tuesday night the second steward, Mr. W. Hall, found him in his cabin and reported him to the chief steward, Mr. W. Lawrence. Carroll, who had a package of clothes with him, said he had come aboard looking for a job. He was stated to have been behaving strangely and was locked in a room in the petty officers’ quarters. He escaped by removing the screws from the lock of the door and was allowed to move freely about the ship. He was last seen in the firemen's mess after midnight on Thursday. A thorough search of the ship was made, but no trace was found of him. He is presumed to have been lost overboard. Two other stowaways, who were not associated with Carroll, were discovered by the chief engineer in the crew’s quarters shortly after the Fort Coulogne left Sydney. They were put to work in the galley and stokehold and were handed over to the police at Auckland.
