NEGRO ABDUCTED FROM GAOL
SHERIFF FEARS LYNCHING PARTY POSSE HUNTING ARMED RAIDERS (10 a.m.) NEW YORK, May 23. Throe armed and masked men seized a negro prisoner from the Northampton County gaol, North Carolina, at 2 a.m. today and the sheriff, Mr. Stephenson, said he feared the negro had been lynched. The gaoler, Mr. Edwards, said the armed men said: “Deliver him u]) or else —” Thereupon, he unlocked the cell and permitted the trio to take the negro into the street where they were joined by a small group and all vanished. The negro was arrested last night and charged with attempted assault upon a young white woman. High school hoys heard her screams and rushed to her aid. The sheriff said that a large posse had made a thorough search but no trace of the negro or his captors had been found 10 hours after his seizure.
