NO INCREASE IN PAY

DOMINION POLICE FORCE OVERTIME ALLOWANCE (P.A.) WELLINGTON, June 5. “From reports ol the estimates presented to the House of Representatives, it may have been gathered that the rate of pay for the police force has been increased for the present financial year to the extent of £70,000,” said the general secretary of the New Zealand Police Association, Mr. J. Meltzer. “Actually that is not the position. There has been no increase in pay, although there has been an overtime allowance given to compensate members of the force for the long hours worked in comparison with other workers.

“The figure of £70.000, the alleged increase in pay, seems to have been arrived at by comparing the amount actually expended last year with the amount of the estimate for this year. It is submitted that the correct comparison is between the amount actually voted last year. £709,401, and the amount ■ of the estimate for this year, £755,038 —an increase of approximately £45,000; This increase is accounted for by provision for an increased number of non-commis-sioned officers, constables and women police, involving a small increase in the cost-of-living bonus payable and the overtime allowance referred to above.”
