BULLDOZER OPERATOR

BRAVERY UNDER FIRE SOUTH PACIFIC BASE, May 22. Even the operator of a bulldozer may be a hero in this war. Lieuten-ant-General Millard F. Harmon, commanding United States Army forces in the south Pacific area, has just awarded engineer-technician, fifth grade, Santos L. Dicho the Legion of Merit for operating a bulldozer under fire at Guadalcanal

Corporal Dicho was engaged on the construction of a much-needed road for supply and evacuation purposes when he came under Japanese sniper and mortar fire from only 200 yards away. He was urged to stop working, but replied, “I’ve got a job to do,’’ and carried on although the bulldozer was hit repeatedly.
