GREAT BRITAIN’S WIN
CAULFIELD GUINEAS (10.30 a.m.) MELBOURNE, Oct. 19. Great Britain proved beyond doubt that he is the outstanding three-year-old of the season with a brilliant win in the Caulfield Guineas at Flemingtou on Saturday. He started on the extreme outside, which is regarded as an extremely difficult task from the mile barrier, yet he won comfortably. He led for the last three furlongs and held off a strong challenge by Amazed who, although game, was no match for the winner. Chatfield was a moderate third. Register improved on recent efforts to finish fourth. Grain Trader and Lea Hero disal>The winner’s trainer, H. E. Freedman, won the Guineas previously with Lucrative. Great Britain cost 850 guineas as a yearling. His connections refused a big offer last 'week. There was a sensational finish in the Caulfield stakes which resulted in a narrow win for Tranquil Star from Tuhitarata and True Flight. It was an unpopular victory as Tranquil Star failed the previous week. A scrimmage near the post affected the chances of True Flight and David Innis. A protest against the first two by the connections of True Flight resulted in the protest being upheld against Tuhitarata, but dismissed against the winner. The horses mentioned pleased their Cup admirers but honours were with True Flight. Velocity and Pandect disappointed. High Road improved on his recent form. _ , . .. The Caulfield Cup lightweights, Portfolio and Colonus surprised by winning the Herbert Power Handicap divisions. Wilson, with an Improved effort, finished third in the first division. Son of Aurous heartened his Melbourne Cup admirers by a strong effort, finishing third in the second division. Having his first start for some months, the New Zealand-bred Crojick finished brilliantly and won the Toorak Handicap. Darkfelt was unlucky that he was hampered at a critical stage. The pacemaker. McKenzie), 2; Hero, 7.10 (H. Morns), 3. Twenty-five started. A neck; a length. Royal Decree was fourth. Time, 1.401.
