GUARDSMAN FINED
INCIDENT AT PARADE - As the result of n complaint by Captain Thomas Gilvray, of the Tairgwhiti Battalion. Home. Guard, Edward Page appeared before Mr. E. >. L, Walton, S.M.. in the Ruatoria Magistrate’s Court on Thursday charged with using obscene language and with disorderly conduct. He wds represented by Mr. G. J. Jeune, and pleaded not guilty. Similar charges brought against James White were withdrawn as the accused had since been mobilised. _ The incident occurred in the To Puka Hall on the evening of October 10, when a parade for officers of the Home Guard was being held. Evidence showed that while ti lecture was beinggiven by Lieut. Parekura Pewharangi, the accused, both of whom were Home Guardsmen of Tokomaru Bay, came into the hall in civilian clothes and created a disturbance. They were under the influence of liquor and used obscene language. Page, who was .a corporal in the guard, whs the duel offender, while White incited him. Both meh should have been at an N.C.G. class in a nearby hall. For using indecent language, Page was fined £2 and costs 16s, • and for disordeiiy conduct he was fined £1 and ordered to pay 18s costs.
