SERVICE APPEALS

latest ballot cases SHIPPING CO’S POSITION Further general service appeals concerning men called in the last ballot were heard by the Gisborne Armed Forces Appeal Board to-day. Mr. F. R. Ball presided and with him were Messrs.' J. E. Benson and C. E. Bickford. The Union Steam Ship Company appealed against the general service oi two shipping clerks, E. Dudley and J, A. Crawford-Smith. The manaeer. K. W, Bull, said in evidence that both reservists were experienced officers. In the past the company had refrained from appealing for single men, but had sought to retain the key married men. Up to June last, 40 per cent of the company’s staff in New Zealand was serving with the forces. Any further depletions would result in difficulty in the work, and any deficiency might result in serious handicaps to the shipping arrangements, which were vital in wartime. Dudlev had been with the company since 1921 and Crawford-Smith since 1923.

The secretary of the board, Mr. I. S. Wallace, said that Crawford-Smith had been provisionally accepted fpr the air force, despite the fact that he was grade HI. Mr. Wallace pointed out also that a letter had been submitted by the fire superintendent, J. W. Kane, supporting the appeal for Crawford-Smith. The letter stated that the reservist was a fire patrol leader in the E.P.S. A sine die adjournment was granted in the case of Crawford-Smith, the reservist to stay in the fire patrol, v/hile Dudley’s case was dismissed. ; A. L. W. • Martin appealed for the exemption from general service of C. W Murtott, carpenter.'. In support, Mr' K. A. ‘-WoOdWard said - the ■ reservist wss required to assist .iffi the completion of a defence contract.—The appeal was dismissed, the. reservist not to be called before January 31. The general service of S. Tronel, crusher, feeder and greaser, was appealed against by W. Stevenson and Sons. Limited. A letter was read from the manager of the applicant company, R. C. Branch, which stated that the reservist was engaged on defence work and was essential to the company—The appeal was dismissed, the reservist not to be called before January 31, and to be exempted from Home Guard service in the meantime. An upholsterer, C. W. A. Richards, was appealed for by A. Christie, Limited. Mr. D. E. Chnsp said in support that the firm had not lodged an appeal previously, but ns the whole male staff had been mobilised, with the exception of the reservist, it was found necessary to appeal. Richards was also looking after C. K. M. Humphreys’ business, the flatter submitting corroborative evidence.—The board adjourned the appeal sine die, the reservist to stay m the Home Guard.

j. Smith appealed against the general service of W. J. Murray, baker. Supporting the appeal, Mr. E. T. Brosnahan said in support that the reservist was the appellant s only assistant. In all, 4000 loaves were produced each week—A sine ffi.e adjournment was recommended, the reservist-to join the Home Guard.

The estate of D. S. Bruce appealed against the general service of R. 3J. Bruce, station manager. Mr. p-h Parkfer appeared in support oL the application, while the approval of the district Primary Production Council was submitted toy the chairman oT the East Coast council, Mr. W. G. Sherratt. --The appeal urns adjourned sine,die, the reservist to stay in the Home Guard.

Sine die adjournments, the reservists to stay in the Home Guard, were recommended as follows: .V. Taylor, farmer, appeal’toy reservist; W. .G. JB. Barry, machinery fitter and department manager, Williams' and Kettle, Ltd.; C. Hustler, transport operator and store manager. A. J. Hustler and National Primary Production Council: All three appeals were supported by Mr. F. W. Nolan.

L. T. Smith, clerk, was appealed for by Williams and Kettle, Ltd. (Mr. F. W. Nolan) against general service, and the appeal was adjourned for review in three months.
