TIE FOR CHAMPIONSHIP FURTHER RECORD BROKEN Postponed from Friday, the Gisborne High School athletic sports were held on Wednesday under cool conditions. A further school record was created, making the fifth for the season. This was established by S. Wills in the hop, step and jump event with a leap of 42ft. Sin., beating by Bin. R. Kells’ record of 1937 and is only 4jin. below the Poverty Bay junior record put up by J. Cleary in 1940. The boys’ senior championship cup was shared by S. Wills and G. Cussin with 17 points apiece. Wills had won the cup during the previous two years, and also won the Richardson Cup for jumps and hurdles. There was a tie for the Cato Cup for distance events, Cassin sharing this with L. Gibson. Other trophies were won as follows: Junior Boys’ Championship: G. Barnwell, with S. Lawn runner-up. Jones Cup, for open events: T. Naden. Girls’ Senior Championship: Annette Shields, with P. Clark runner-up. Girls’ Junior Championship; Joyce Torrey, runner-up Betty Forshaw. Marjorie Young Memorial Cup, for winning house: Waikanne House. Girls’ Form Championship: Form VB lower.
