Miss C. Gudgeon is visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs, M. Gudgeon, Tikitiki. Private John Beamish, Hawke’s Bay, was recently the guest of Mrs. R. A. Fox-Rogei’s, Gladstone road.

Miss Helen McGregor, Ballanee street, has commenced her training as a member of tho Women’s Auxiliary Air Force. Mrs. J. O. Musgrave, Beach road, returned on Friday from a visit to her sister, Mrs. G. Anderson, Opotiki. Mrs. C. Parker, who has been the guest of her sisters, Mrs. A. D. Sherrill, Waikohu, ami Mrs. R. McKay, Cobden street, left today for Dannevirke eix route to her home in Wellington. The funds of the Gisborne branch of the Y.M.C.A. benefited as the result of a successful jumble sale conducted by the menthol's of the Ladies’ Auxiliary of the Y.M.C.A. on Friday afternoon. The arrangements were efficiently carried out and the stalls, in addition to. clothing, offered for sale produce and miscellaneous articles.

Mrs. W. E. Goff'e, Ormond load, returned to Gisborne on Friday after attending an executive meeting of the National Council of Women in Wellington. She was present at a meeting of delegates from the various women’s organisations held in Hastings, at which the Dominion secretary of the National Council of Women, Miss Jamieson, gave an address on the work of the council. Mrs, Goff'e also attended the district convention of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union while in Hastings. MANUTUKE MOTHERS’ UNION A meeting of the Manutuke branch of the Mothers' Union was, held at the mission house last Thursday, following an admission service in the church taken by the Rev. W. Mataira, when one associate and one new member were admitted. Mrs. Pare Keiha presided at the meeting as enrolling member. Mrs. Jones, on behalf of the Mothers’ Union, congratulated Mi's. Keiha on the honour bestowed upon her son, Captain Keiha, M.C., and voiced the pride of all Maori mothers in the achievement of their sons. Members expressed their regret at the absence of their secretary,_ Miss Newman, who was in Chelsea Hospital. P.B. CROQUET CLUB OPENS At the official opening of the Poverty Bay Croquet Club for the 1942-43 season on Saturday afternoon, a large attendance of members and visitors was welcomed by the president, Mrs. A. Falconer, to whom a charming bouqdet was presented by Mrs. T. Robertson, on behalf on the members. Good wishes for the success of the coming season were conveyed to the club by Mrs. E. E. Somervell, president of the Poverty Bay Croquet Centre, Mrs. W. E. Chamberlain, president of the Gisborne Croquet Club, and Mrs. W. M. Jenkins, president of the Turanga Croquet Club.^ The ceremony of declaring the greens open for play was performed by Mr. H. Ritchie, president of the Poverty Bay Bowling Club. A delicious afternoon tea was served out-of-doors from tables decorated with mixed flowers in shades of blue and gold, the club colours. During the afternoon a number of lawn competitions were enjoyed, the winners being suitably rewarded. TOWNSWOMEN’S GUILD

A motion of sympathy was passed with Miss W. LyHtiar in the death of her father, Mr. W. D. Lysnar, at the monthly meeting of the Gisborne Townswomen’s Guild, held at the Bon Accord Lounge yesterday afternoon. There was an attendance of 60 members, and one new member, Mrs. Russell, was welcomed. , , __ , The aspirations were read by Mrs. Haacne, and Mrs. Walworth contributed the “thought” for the month. In response to an appeal made by the president, Mrs. P. Barry, on behalf of the Red Cross Society. Mesdames Robinson, McGibbon and Butler volunteered their services for the instruction of disabled soldiers in various handcrafts. . , Reports on the activities of the musical and drama circles were presented by Mrs. A. Baillie and Mrs. R. Johnson, respectively, and a report on the patriotic work of the knitting circle stated that 15 scarves, one balaclava, two pairs of socks and 30 pairs of mittens had been completed during' the month. The opportunity was taken by Mrs. Barry to compliment Mrs. R. E. Alexander on her wonderful effort in making 100 quiits for evacuees. . It was reported that eight Christmas parcels. including one for Miss I. Somervell, had been despatched to husbands and sons of members serving with the overseas fighting forces. . A competition was won by Mrs. C. Greig. Two delightful elocutionary numbers given by Mrs. N. Hooper were greeted with approval. Afternoon tea was served by Mesdames McKay, Soderston, Darling, Campbell. and Quinn.
