AMATEUR ATHLETICS
REVIVAL IN GISBORNE Prospects are bright for a revival of amateur athletics in Gisborne this season, and much interest is being taken by members oi the armed forces who will be in Gisborne when the meetings are held. The report of the committee to be presented to the annual meeting to be held tomorrow night mentions the inability of the club to maintain its weekly sports events after Japan entered the war, and states that because of the large number of competitor members being drawn into the armed forces those remaining could be counted on one hand, a record of which the club was proud. Four evening meetings were held last season before the club went into recess. The finances of the clud had been maintained in a satisfactory position, despite the decision not to charge membership fees. Collections made at‘the sports meetings had yielded good results. The club had been looking forward to the holding of the 1942 centre championships in Gisborne, but in view of the war situation this was abandoned. The club, however, had been promised the first Hawke’s BayPoverty Bay championships after the war.
