Need For Firemen Outspoke!! criticism of alleged lack of appreciation by the No. 1 Armed Forces Appeal Board of the necessity for maintaining the strength of the Whangarei Fire Brigade to protect the interests of the town in the event of an enemy attack was made by members of the Whangarei Fife Board. The matter is to be discussed with the district controller. Plunkct Flower Day Gisborne members of, the Plunket Society were disappointed last week 'at having to postpone the annual flower day for the purpose of securing funds to carry on. the work of the society, which depends on voluntary contributions, but they are making strenuous endeavours to make a success o[ the effort next. Friday, Flowers will be available for sale at a shop opposite the Herald office, while badges will be on sale on the street. s» Competition Cups Included among the. many cups presented at the -Conclusion, of the Gisborne Competitions Society’s annual festival in the Opera House on Saturday night were two trophies for elocution classes.. The first cup was presented by the Lee Bros, for the Junior Elocution Test and was won by Burnley Cooper, and the second was presented to the best performer in the recitation classes for girls or boys under 10, by Mrs. E. Lee. This hophy was awarded to Cynthia Kane. Alleged Breach of Probation
Before Mr. A. A. Fraser, J.P., in lire Gisborne Magistrate’s Court this morning, William Pere. aged 20, a labourer, was charged with not com plying with the terms of his probation order, and was remanded to appear on September 9. In applying for the remand, Senior-Sergeant H. H. Russell said he was not satisfied that the defendant had committed the breach knowingly, and thought that if the magistrate would explain the obligations fully, Pere might, be allowed to continue on probation. Wairoa Nervousness Business in Wairoa last Friday night, the late night, fell- off very markedly in comparison with, other late nights, reports the Herald’s representative. This is put down to the understandable nervousness of many women who are now feeling the reaction after the excitement of the discovery of the two women’s mutilated bodies recently. It was noticeable, too,’ that a regular dance held on Saturday night, had a much smaller attendance than visual. The police point out, however, that arrangements have been made for the adequate protection of all women against anything untoward.
Early Newspaper A copy of the first issue, of the Lyttelton Times, one of the earliest New Zealand newspapers, is , being donated to the Churchill Auctions by Mr. F. Aston, Gisborne. This paper was published on January 'll, 1851. or over 91 years ago. One interesting paragraph, viewed in the light of present prices, which in some cases are little different from to-day, is one giving retail prices on the Lyttelton market on the date of publication, as follows: First flour, 25s pci’ cwt.; bread, per 21b loaf, 7d; beef, 5d per lb; mutton, 5d .per lb; pork, 5d per lb; fowls, per pair, 3s; ducks, per pair, 4s; fresh butter. Is 6d per lb; salt butter, Is 3d per lb; potatoes, £5 per ton; eggs, 2s per doz.; cheese, New Zealand, Is 4d per lb; maize, 5s 6d per bushel; ale, 2s 8d per gallon: ham and bacon, 7d per lb; firewood, per cord, £1; sawn timber, 10s to 18s per 100 ft.
