MATAWAI NEWS

A Matawai Patriotic Committee was formed at a public meeting held in Matawai on Saturday. Mrs. C. V. Smith was voted to the chair, and Mrs. H. Bulat accepted the secretaryship. Other members include Mesdames W. L. Rutledge, R. Mortleman, H. O. Rowley, and Messrs J. W. Smith and C. W. E. Kortc. It was arranged to have a sports meeting in the township on Saturday next, when events and amusementß for young and old will be arranged. The children's function held on Friday night in aid of the baby campaign was a great success. The pi-ogramme included singing and dancing, musical games, and a play. The music was gratuitously supplied by Misses M. Korte, J. Jackson, and G. Mazengarb. Miss B. McGachie and Mrs. G. Bevin acted as M.Cs. Misses Jill and Pat Grant recited together and Pat Grant later gave a recitation. Misses Joy and Maureen Thomas, Motuhora, contributed a song and a play managed by Mrs. A. Grant formed another interesting item, the cast including Misses J. and P. Grant. N. Robb, D. Taylor, B. McGachie and Mrs. Bevan. There was a good attendance of children and parents, and many visitors from Motu and Motuhora. A dainty supper was provided. Miss Calcott is visiting her home at Matawai.—Mrs. J. Mills and her little son are the guests of Mrs. W. Mortleman. — Mrs. A. J. Hustler, Tukaputahi. was a recent visitor to Matawai. —Mr. C. Hustler is on a hojiday visit to Auckland. —Mrs. W. Mortleman and Mrs. H. Bulst were joint hostesses 4tt a five hundred evening held at (he former’s residence on Wednesday evening in aid 'of the patriotic funds. Seven tables were occupied, and a dainty supper was served. Miss M, Korte and Mr. R. K. Marley were the winners. The monthly meeting of the Matawai Red Cross sub-centre was held on Saturday. Miss Mortleman presiding over a' good attendance. Mrs. R. Mortleman acted as secretary in the absence of Miss Gibson. Two spinning wheels were in use, other members combing the fleece wool, and knitting. Word was received that the spinning wheel recently bought by the branch would be ready for use at next meeting.
