EXCESSIVE RATIONS
ANIMAL FOODSTUFFS PROMINENT MEN FINED (2 p.m.) LONDON, Aug. 28. The Paymaster-General and Minister- of Reconstruction, Sir William Jowitt. and Lord Burghley, who is controller of American supplies in the Mihistry of Aircraft Production. Sir George Courthope and Admiral Sir Aubrey Smith, who was a former aid-de-camp to His Majesty, were arriong the 15 defendants summoned P.t a special court in Canterbury on a charge of obtaining, rationed foodstuffs for animals in excess o f the authorised quantity. The prosecutor said that he had come to the conclusion the defendants neither knew nor realised they were receiving grain in excess of coupon valbe. Sir William Jowitt’s farm, for instance, was being conducted by a manager. Similar circumstances applied to the other defendants. Sir William Jowitt was fined £5. Lora Burghley £l, Sir William Courthone £2. and Admiral Smith 10s.
