DIRECTOR'S APPEALS

NO SPECIAL SIGNIFICANCE “When an appeal is lodged in the name of tpe Director of National Service it does not mean that'the case is supported by the director,” said the Crown representative on the , No. 2 (Auckland) Armed Forces Appeal Board, Mr. L. N. Harris. Two appellants who came before the board were under the impression that the fact that their appeals had been lodged in the name of the director lent the cases a special significance. Mr. Harris explained that the only way in which appeals which had not been lodged in the prescribed time could be brought before the board was for them to lie lodged by the Director of National Service. This was nothing more than a formality which clothed the board with the jurisdiction fpr hearing the appeal which it would otherwise lack, The onus of establishing ’ a case to thp satisfaction of the board still rested on the person seeking' relief. “The sooner this matter is cleared up the better,” said the chairman of the board, Mr. I. J. GOldstine. “It is as well that the public should realise the position with regard to appeals in the name of the Director of Nat.ional i Service. Such cases are judged, not by the fact that they bear the director’s name, but on the evidence produced by the person seeking relief.”
