OBITUARY

MR. ALBERT M. LEWIS FORMER BUSINESSMAN The death of Mr. Albert Michael Lewis occurred in Wellington yesterday, and removes one who was/prominent in business arid local body circles in the Gisborne district for many years. Mr. Lewis, who was born in Auckland 7l years ago, came to Gisborne with his parents and three brothers in 1878. his father, the late Mr. Henry Lewis, being one of the town's early business men and Mayors.

After his education in Gisborne, Mr. Albert Lewis joined his father in business, and then opened up on his own account in Te Karaka, where he left his mark in local body work, being a member of the original Waikohu County Council, of which he remained a mernber for six ypars. He was the first chairman of the Te Karaka Town Board, chairman of the Te Karaka School Committee for 20 years, a member of the Cook Hospital Board, a member of the Gisborne Harbour Board, and a member of the Licensing Committee. He was also a justice of the peace."

After giving up .business' in Te Karaka, Mr. Lewis came to Gisborne, arid opened a motor garage in Grey street. He left this business to enter the motor trade in Auckland, subsequently securing an appointment as chief salesman for Todd Motors, Ltd., Wellington, a position he held up to the time of his death. His wife died two years ago. Left to mourn their loss are two sons and three daughters, the family comprising Mr. C. Lewis, Wellington, MEL. Lewis! New Plymouth, Mrs. R. Trotter, Kanakanaia, Mrs. V. Carr, Auckland, and Mrs. P. Redwood, Auckland. There are also nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild. There is also one brother, Mr. Edwin Lewis, Gisborne. MR. WILLIAM MORRIS The death occurred at the Cook Hospital yesterday of Mr. William (Whit) Morris, who had lived all his life iti the Gisborne district, apart from a period spent as a member of the New Zealand forces in the Boer War. Born in Ormond 62 years ago, he was still in his teens when he enlisted for service in South Africa, and when he returned he was employed by the Railways Department in the Gisborne district for many years. His wife, wild was formerly Miss Gwen Morris, came from England to Gisborne, where they were married, and she and one daughter, Mrs. N. G. Harvey, ormond, are left to mourn their loss. The interment is to be with military honours, and members of the R.S.A., of which he was a member, and particularly S.outh African veterans, are to assemble at the R.S.A. office at 10.45 a.m. on M ond ?y for the P ur P ose of .attending the service at Cochrane’s chapel at 11 o’clock and the interment at the South African plot at the Taruheru cemetery.
