EAST INDIES ZONE JAP. LANDINGS PARACHUTE TROOPS LOSS OF TRANSPORTS (Elec. Tel. Copyright-—United Press Assn.) (British Official Wireless.) Reed. 1 p.m. RUGBY, Jan. 11. A Netherlands East Indies communique from Batavia states: “During Saturday night, Japanese landed troops on the island of Tarakan in north-eastern Borneo. The garrison is putting up fierce resistance. “Bombers of the Netherlands East Indies Air , Force attacked enemy ships. Good results were observed. Two direct hits were scored on enemy troop ships and one near miss to a warship was observed. Three enemy planes were shot down by our air force. “At the same time the enemy land-, ed some troops near Minnahassa, in the north of the Celebes. Parachutists were dropped. The garrison is putting up a fierce resistance and much destruction, according to prearranged plan, has been executed. Some enemy activity took place over points of the outer provinces. “A Netherlands merchant steamer was attacked by a Japanese submarine. A flying boat-of the Royal Netherlands Navy came to the assist-, ance of the merchantman and the attack failed. “A Netherlands submarine operating under the command of the British, commander in East Asia sank two transport ships in the Gulf of Siam.”
