PHILIPPINE DEFENDERS TROOPS’ MORALE HIGH (Reed. Jan. 9,2 p.m.) WASHINGTON, Jan. 8. A War Department communique states: "In the Philippine theatre, fighting varying in intensity is reported on all sections of the front. These operations are preparatory to a largescale general attack by the enemy. Japanese reinforcements are being brought up to the front and the indications point to a renewal of offensives by the enemy. "General MacArthur, Commander-in-Chief in the Philippines, reports that the morale and determination of the American and Philippine troops is high and that they may be counted on to continue the resistance with skill and courage. For the first time for several days there were no enemy air attacks on the fortifications in Manila Bay. Enemy air activity has been confined to reconnaissance.
