RADIO BROADCASTS
UNITED STATES SERVICES The impact of war on the United States has brought a considerable increase in the number of transmissions froin powerful broadcasting stations in the United States, which can be heard in New Zealand. Many of the bigger stations, such as WRCA, New York, WGEA and WGEO, Schenectady, and KGEI, San Francisco, have instituted 24hour services in which news bulletins and commentaries are freely interspersed. In case of KGEI, which before the Japanese attack operated on two wavelengths, one in the 31-metre band and the other in the 19-metre band, there are at least seven wavelengths in use. For the period of the New Zealand evening there used to be only one transmitter in use, on the 31metre band, and that was at this time. of year only audible with the best receiving equipment. To-day, over a more extended period, this station transmits on four wavelengths, in the six, seven, nine, and 10 megacycle frequencies, corresponding to wavelengths between 49 and 28 metres. That on approximately 7.8 megacycles is of a strength that would suggest that it is beamed on the Dominion, and is received with a clarity comparable to that of the local YA stations. It gives hourly news bulletins.
