LAND SETTLEMENT
RETURNED MEN’S FUTURE (Herald Correspondent.) Further steps were taken in Wairoa yesterday towards securing land for the settlement of soldiers returning from the present war. A committee, representative of all local bodies in the district, considered the whole position. It set up a small sub-committee, which will prepare a list of properties in the district that are considered suitable for cutting up and for the use of men who wish to settle on the land. Speakers stressed that the main thing wanted in New Zealand to-day was small farms and big factories. It was stated also that land perfectly suitable for the settlement of returned men should be secured, but at the same time the men to settle must also be suitable. The committee decided to work on broad principles and to do its Utmost to avoid mistakes made after the last war when land settlement was gone into. Small blocks, rather than large areas, were urged for settlement.
