RECRUITS FOR TRADE

NOT ENOUGH TRAINED STATES PERTURBED SYDNEY, Dec. 20. A conference of State Ministers of Education is to be held in Hobart early in February, to consider the problems raised by industrial expansion, under the plans for national defence and economic development. The Federal Government will be asked to send a representative.

The Minister for Education, Mr. D. Drummond, said yesterday that the States were gravely concerned at the effect on industry of the Federal scheme for the training of many thousands of air force mechanics.

Every endeavour was being made in New South Wales to assist the Commonwealth ta carry out this training, he added. It was clear, however, that the tremendous drain which this scheme would impose on the supply of partially trained men must seriously affect reserves of trained technical men, if the war continued for two years or longer.
