U-BOAT FAILS
TORPEDO ATTACK DAMAGE CAUSED BATTLESHIP ESCAPES QUEEN ELIZABETH TYPE PROCEEDING ON COURSE LOSS OF THREE LIVES (Klee. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) (Reed. Dec. 30, 9 a.m.) LONDON, Dec. 29. The Admiralty announced this afternoon: “A torpedo attack has been made on a British battleship by a U-boat. Some damage was caused and three men were killed.” It is learned that the ship was of the Queen Elizabeth class. Inquiries at the Admiralty elicited the information that the battleship referred to is the same ship as has been mentioned in a communique issued by the German High Command. It can be stated that the battleship is safe and is proceeding on her course. The High Command statement issued in Berlin was that a “German submarine torpedoed a battleship of the Queen Elizabeth class off the west of Scotland.”
