An engagement is announced between Alex Stuart Gibson, of W.aingalte, elder son of Mr. Chas. Gibson, Matawhero, and the late Mrs. Gibson, and Olga Frances, elder daughter of Mr. and Mrs. G. E. Bannister, Oswald street, Mangapapa, Gisborne.

Dr. Henry Whittle, son of the late Mr. E. Whittle, New Plymouth, lias been appointed to the medical staff ot the Mater Misericordiae Hospital, North Sydney.

Accompanying his son and son-in-law, Messrs. J. S. Muir and H. W. Johnston, Mr. Stanley Muir left yesterday to spend the New Year weekend in Te Whaiti.

Advice has been received by Mr. L. E. Schwabe, Gisborne, that he was successful in passing Harmony I for the degree of Mus.B in the recent University of New Zealand examinations.

Christmas Day was the ninety-ninth birthday of Mrs. Duncan McFarlane, a former Mayoress of Invercargill. Mrs. McFarlane, who is in good health thoroughly enjoyed her birthday. Mrs. McFarlane came to New Zealand from Scotland as a young woman. As Mayoress of Invercargill she did much work for patriotic causes during the last war, the organisation of sewing for the Belgians being one of her tasks.
