MOTU VOLUNTEERS

FAREWELL TENDERED (Herald Correspondent.) Four popular young men of the .Matawai-Motu district who have volunteered for active service with the First Echelon were tendered a public farewell in the Motu Hall on Saturday night. The hall, which was gaily decorated with scarlet poppies and lycopodium, was almost crowded, and dancing was enjoyed to music supplied by Miss Una Reed. Mrs. C. Whitehead played extras. The local branch of the Returned Soldiers' Association, assisted by a iadies’ committee, had all the arrangements well organised. Mr. H. C. Boys, president, paid a tribute to the young men, and, on behalf of the Returned Soldiers’ Association', presented each with a propelling pencil. Mr. G. O. Donovan, on behalf of the public, presented each with a wallet containing a sum of money.

Mr. Fred Read, who spoke on behalf of the football club, said he knew that the four boys would play the game overseas as they had done on the local football field —clean, and with honour to their team.

The young men concerned were Messrs. T. Twisleton. H. Burburough, J Quinn, and T. Lynch. Others present, and on service were Captain Foster, and Mr. J. Kane, of the air force.
