ZOO EXHIBITS
SANCTUARY IN N.Z. OFFER TO LONDON A tentative offer to provide sanctuary for some of the more valuable exhibits at the Regent’s Park Zoo. London, for the duration of the war has been made from the Auckland Zoo. A condition of the offer is that if accepted the controlling authority, the Auckland City Council, should not be involved in any freight charges or other costs of transport. The curator oi the Auckland Zoo, Lieutenant-Colonel Sawer, said that Auckland could offer sanctuary for a quantity of valuable stock which might otherwise have to be killed or disposed of because of the war and attendant factors. Because of the lower receipts the Regent’s Park finances had been affected, while great difficulty was being experienced in obtaining various foods due to war restrictions. Already some exhibits had been disposed of or sent to such country zoos as Whipsnade. To avoid obvious dangers following possible destructive air raids, all poisonous snakes had been killed and the reptile house had been closed.
