AMONG THE INTERNED

GESTAPO MEN BOGUS REFUGEES LONDON, Dec. 1. It is recorded by the Evening Standard that among the Germans who are now in internment camps in this country are a number of Nazis who are known to be members of the Gestapo. Most of these secret agents were sent here with bogus papers so that they could pass themselves off as refugees. Some were arrested in the great round-up of suspects that took place all over Britain immediately war began. Olliers were unmasked when their credentials were investigated by the tribunals examining the cases of all German and Austrian subjects in this country.

It has been officially stated that 348 of the Germans who have appeared before Enemy Alien Tribunals have been sent to internment camps. The names of those who have been dealt with in this way are not published. If a list of Germans in internment camps was made public, the Nazis would know which of their secret agents had been detected. For this reason, the names of suspects who were rounded up at the outbreak of war also have been withheld. The official announcement was confined to a statement that “some hundreds” of enemy aliens had been arrested for purposes of national security. -
