TELEGRAPH TRAFFIC
SUBSTANTIAL DECREASE TOTAL FOR FIVE DAYS COMPARISON WITH 1937 There was a substantial falling off in the number of Christmas greetings sent by telegraph this year compared with the figures for the last festive season. The decrease coincided with the increase in the cost of the messages from sixpence last year to eightpence, and lOd as the rate for messages sent on December 23. Following are the figures for the five days preceding Christmas for the past two years:— Traffic in 1939
To-day was an exceptional one for the postmen in Gisborne as English and Australian mails were received yesterday and this morning. It is usual for the mailroom to be busy on the day after the Christmas Day and Boxing Day holidays as there is always an accumulation of mail to be dealt with. The additional work of distributing overseas mail was an added burden this morning.
