HORSE JUMPING

GOOD PERFORMANCES SPORTS AT ORMOND ANNUAL FIXTURE Some of the best horses seen at sports fixtures in the Poverty Bay district competed in the annual meeting conducted yesterday by the Ormond Sports Club. The horse events provided the main section of the programme, and the performances generally were of a high standard. The attendance of the public was not as large as in some recent years. The entries in the horse events were well up to those of last year. The duties of judge were carried out by Mr, W. L. Rutledge, Matawai, and a large number of races and competitions were staged.

The enthusiasm of some of the riders was illustrated by the long journeys covered to be present at the meeting. Two young men set out from Whatatutu early in the morning on their mounts, which subsequently took a prominent part in the day’s events.

Ideal weather prevailed at the opening of the meeting, but conditions showed a marked change in the afternoon, when the sports were continued between showers. The enthusiasm of the competitors was not affected by the rain, keen contests being witnessed to the close of the programme late in the day.

A source of considerable interest to the spectators, who included many people from Gisborne, as well as country residents, was a series of chopping events, in which leading Poverty Bay axemen took part. The concluding results of the meeting were: — Horse Events Hunters’ Jump, cup donated by Mr. E. Ward (18 entries).—M. Moore’s Russett Moor, 1; Miss L. Hood’s Bruiser, 2; Miss L. Hood’s Convict, 3.
