OIL FOR GERMANY

RUMANIAN PACT RECIPROCAL SCHEME CZECH ARMS SUPPLY CHEAP NAZI BUYING EXPORTS MAY SUFFER (Elec. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) (Reed. Dec. 23, 9 a.m.) LONDON, Dec. 22. Reports from Bucharest state that the Rumanian-German trade agreement was signed yesterday. Rumania is to supply 1,560,000 tons of oil yearly and to stabilise the prices of products in which Germany is interested. Reciprocally Rumania will receive armaments from Czechoslovakian firms, for which she already holds credits. The exchange has been fixed at 49.5 lei to one reichsmark. The Bucharest correspondent of the New York Times states that the new exchange rate will enable Germany to buy Rumanian goods 22 per cent cheaper, giving her an advantage over Britain and France in the competition for Rumanian oil and wheat and reducing the German debt to Rumania by 132,000,000 lei. It is likely that German exports to Rumania will suffer unless adequate compensation is arranged. It is believed that Italy will benefit most. The Bucharest correspondent of the United Press of America, commenting on the trade pact, declares that diplomats regard as genuine the pledge which Germany was reported on December 8 to have given guaranteeing Rumania’s frontiers, except the Bulgarian, in exchange for economic concessions.
