PRODUCTION PEAK
GISBORNE DAIRYING ABUNDANCE OF HAY The peak of dairy production has been later than usual in the Gisborne district this season, and it has been reached only lately. Cows in most parts of the district are holding steadily to their maximum output, although some have commenced their seasonal decline. Frequently in the Gisborne district, the peak production is reached in November, but the maintenance of a good pasture growth right up to the present has allowed the cows to increase their flow of milk until the last week or so.
Greater preparation lias been made by Gisborne district farmers this year for the provision of supplementary crops, for which the season has been most favourable, and there should be ample of this feed available to keep production up to a high level well into the autumn.
A great deal more hay than usual has been harvested in the Gisborne district this season, and on present indications there should be no shortage next winter. The Waikato also : s reported to be well supplied, and in other districts, too, there has been no shortage. However, Gisborne farmers are unlikely to require supplies from outside districts next winter, and the position should be in direct contrast to that prevailing this year, when supplies were secured from the Waikato and also from the South Island, the hay selling at one period up'to (is per bale.
