RAPID PROGRES

CENTENNIAL DRIVE STANLEY ROAD SECTION COMPLETION EFFORTS Rapid progress was being made this morning with the spreading of metal on the Stanley road end ot the centennial marine drive in an eii'ort to have the waterfront route opened up and available for traffic during the Christmas holidays, it was expected that the work would be completed this afternoon before the gang of No. 13 scheme men finished work for the vacation. In thd gang of 15 men under the foreman, Mr. E. Powell, there were six ex-servicemen of the Great War and all were taking a great pride in the work. Their co-operation in attempting to drive the road through before Christmas was being appreciated by the committee sponsoring the marine drive. The work of forming the half-mile of road from Salisbury road to Stanley road, and the metalling and surfacing of the footpaths with a coating of clay has taken a day over two months. The completion of this work is the first step in the formation of a seven-mile road along the waterfront to the mouth of the Waipaoa River. It has been felt by the committee that the opening of the drive over Christmas will be appreciated by the public and will give people an indication of the worth of the work. Those who had assisted financially in the project would be given an opportunity to see how their money was being spent and others, realising the benefits of opening up so pleasant a drive by tiie sea, might be tempted to give to the funds and assist tire committee io continue the work. Further work will be carried on after the holidays provided No. 13 scheme men are available and the funds are in hand. The work will be continued in small stages as the money and men were available. In the autumn of next year, centennial year, planting will be carried out under the supervision of the Gisborne and District Beautifying Association.
