WAIAPU COUNTY

MEETING OF COUNCIL REGISTRATION OF DOGS NOXIOUS WEED GROWTH TE PUIA MEMORIAL (Heruld Correspondent.) At this month’s meeting of the Waiapu County Council there were present the chairman, Cr. D. W. W. Williams, and Crs. J. Busby, 11. H. Fairlie. M. Hyland. H. M. Jackson, F. R. Jefferd, F. Manuel, H. Te R'apu and O. T. Williams. The Department of Internal Affairs advised that in order to overcome the possible late delivery of arecoline hydrobromide for the prevention of hydatids, the registration of dogs for 1940 would be postponed to commence one month later than in previous years. Cards for the instruction of users of arecoline hydrobromide would be supplied again to all persons registering dogs in the coming year.—The county clerk, Mr. A. G. Hicks, reported having asked the department if the instruction cards also could be printed in the Maori language, as most of the owners of dogs in the Waiapu County were Maoris. A reply from the department stated that the suggestion would be given careful consideration. The council was advised of the growth of variegated t-histle in a few places throughout the county, and agreed to pass the information on to the inspector of noxious weeds to instruct owners of land on which the thistle was reported to be growing to clear their properties. Centennial Memorial The council approved of the substitution of a scheme to improve the Te -Puia Public Hall as a centennial memorial for Te Puia in lieu of the tree-planting scheme originally decided upon. The hall, when the extensive alterations were completed, would be known as the Te Puia Centennial Memorial Hall. The council decided that the offices of the council would close for the Christmas holidays on December 22 and reopen on January 8.

The need for the provision of public conveniences in Tokomaru Bay was discussed. It was thought that these should be placed in the vicinity of the bus depot, but owing to the fact that the new deviation of the State highway through Tokomaru Bay might afi'ect that situation it was decided to leave the matter over until the deviation was completed. The need of a more uniform system of parking motor vehicles in Ruatoria in the vicinity of the picture theatre was considered. It was stated that at present cars were parked in haphazard fashion and caused much confusion. The council directed the county engineer to have notices erected on the area instructing motorists to park at an angle upon which he considered suitable.
